Janazah & Cemetery Procedures

This page is here to support families with clear steps from the announcement of death through Janazah prayer and burial. Please read this first—then contact the Masjid coordinator.

Qur’an 2:156“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we return.”
FAST START (2 minutes)
  1. Notify your funeral home (or hospital case manager) to begin official paperwork.
  2. Text the death certificate screenshot/photo to the Masjid contact below.
  3. Confirm Janazah prayer location/time and burial plan with the coordinator.
Note: If there is any urgent medical/legal situation, follow the funeral home/hospital guidance first, then contact the Masjid coordinator.

What to do immediately (first 30 minutes)

These steps help the family move quickly and calmly while ensuring the Masjid can coordinate Janazah and burial without delays.

Goal: Confirm paperwork + coordinator contact + next steps
1) Confirm the medical/legal basics
  • Hospital or authorities confirm the death and next steps.
  • Choose a funeral home (or contact your existing provider).
  • Ask what documents are required for burial scheduling in your county.
2) Contact the Masjid coordinator
  • Text a photo/screenshot of the death certificate as soon as available.
  • Share: deceased name, family contact name/number, and preferred timing.
  • Coordinator will advise whether the body comes to the Masjid or goes directly to the cemetery.
3) Prepare the essential info (saves calls)
Deceased Details
Full name (English), date of birth, date of death
Family Point of Contact
Name + phone number of the main decision-maker
Timing & Location

What documents are needed

To avoid delays, please prepare these items as early as possible. Requirements can vary depending on the situation and funeral home guidance.

Required for Masjid coordination
  • Death certificate — send a photo/screenshot to the Masjid coordinator.
  • Deceased person’s full name (English) + DOB + DOD
  • Family point-of-contact name + phone number
Often required by funeral homes / authorities
  • Government ID for the family point of contact
  • Hospital or medical examiner documentation (as applicable)
  • County permits and filing requirements (handled by funeral home)
Funeral homes will guide the family through legal filing requirements.
How to submit documents
Send the death certificate photo/screenshot to Mustafa at (843) 655-7621 via Text or WhatsApp.
Do not post sensitive documents publicly or in group chats.

Step-by-step process (death → Janazah → burial)

Below is the typical flow. Some steps may shift depending on the hospital, funeral home, and timing.

1
Confirmation & paperwork begins
  • Hospital/authorities confirm and release to funeral home.
  • Family selects a funeral home (if not already chosen).
  • Death certificate process starts (funeral home guides).
2
Contact GSIS coordinator
  • Text the death certificate screenshot/photo as soon as available.
  • Confirm family point-of-contact details.
  • Coordinator advises next steps and scheduling.
3
Ghusl & kafan (preparation)
This may be arranged through the funeral home and/or community resources depending on the situation.
[Add GSIS-specific guidance here if applicable.]
4
Janazah prayer arrangements
  • Janazah may be held at the Masjid or cemetery depending on timing/logistics.
  • Coordinator confirms time and location with the Imam and family.
  • Announcements may be shared per Masjid policy.
5) Burial at the GSIS cemetery
The burial is coordinated through the GSIS cemetery process and the coordinator. Families should follow the confirmed arrival time and instructions for parking and gathering.
Cemetery access, digger scheduling, and plot readiness will be coordinated based on availability.

Masjid vs Funeral Home responsibilities

Clear responsibilities reduce confusion and delays. The Masjid supports religious coordination and cemetery procedures; funeral homes handle licensed transportation and legal filing.

GSIS / Masjid typically coordinates
  • Janazah prayer scheduling (with the Imam)
  • GSIS cemetery burial coordination
  • Community guidance and support
  • Burial service package administration (if applicable)
Funeral home typically handles
  • Transportation of the deceased (hospital/home → facility → cemetery)
  • Legal paperwork and county requirements
  • Death certificate filing and permits
  • Preparation services as licensed/contracted
Important: GSIS is not a funeral home. Families should coordinate legal documentation and transport with licensed providers.

FAQ (the call-killers)

These answers cover the most common questions we receive. If you still need help, contact the coordinator above.

In most situations, contact the funeral home/hospital first for legal steps, then contact the Masjid coordinator as early as possible for Janazah and cemetery coordination.
Is the death certificate required?
Yes—please text a photo/screenshot to the coordinator when available so burial scheduling can proceed without delays.
Will the body come to the Masjid?
It depends on timing and logistics. The coordinator will confirm whether the body comes to the Masjid or is moved directly to the cemetery.
How much does GSIS cemetery burial cost?
GSIS cemetery burial service is $1,500, which includes a granite headstone and cemetery-related services. See “Burial Service Package” above for details.
More FAQs to add (recommended):
